Traditional Asian meals in Korea

"I can understand why someone would become a food-tourist here."

Kimchi is not the only old traditional food that Koreans still eat daily, at least weekly. There are many types of traditional foods that are worth trying.

Jjajangmyon (짜장면) is a Korean-Chinese cuisine, noodles topped with thick black bean sauce, sliced pork and some vegetables. Jjajang is the name of the sauce and myeon (or myun) means noodles.

Tonkatsu (돈가스) is originally from Japan, and it's a very normal and considerably cheap meal in Korea. Usually pork fillet or pork loin, served with different side dishes like kimchi, cabbage, rice, salad etc.

Mandu (만두) is a Korean dumpling, filled with meat, kimchi etc. Grilled or fried dumpling is called gunmandu, when steamed it's jjinmandu and when boiled the name changes to mulmandu.

Seolleongtang (설렁탕)  and other Korean soups are very good! There are many types, with different kind of meats and flavours and spices and broths. Usually eaten with many side dishes and rice.

Pajeon (파전) is a pancake-like dish made from eggs, flour and green onions, often comes with a lot of ingredients though.

Juk () is Korean porridge. Koreans even have restaurants only for different types of porridges. For example this one has mushroom and vegetables in it. (I eat this when I'm sick, that's normal in Korea.)

Jjamppong (짬뽕) is a Chinese-style very spicy food with wheat-flour noodles, seafood, and lots of chili-oil and onions.

This is sushi, everyone should know that. And everyone should also know that sushi is from Japan.

Kimbap (김밥) is the Korean version on sushi! The main ingredients are seaweed (kim) for wrapping of course, and rice (bap). In the picture we have tuna-kimbap with additional vegetables, egg etc.

Chicken in all of its forms! Fried chicken is more than just KFC, Koreans have this kind of traditional restaurants everywhere.

Tteokbokki (떡볶이), Korean fish cake (어묵 or 오뎅) and some soup + side dishes.

Tteokbokki, mandu, kimbap, soup and side dish.

When you order meat in a restaurant like this, you'll get much more than that, this is just a part of it. You can add some soup and rice to your order if meat and many, many side dishes are not enough.

This is how meat is eaten, spiced and wrapped.

The best place for enjoying beautiful food of course surrounded by a beautiful scenery in a traditional Korean restaurant. This one is in Paju.

This restaurant is very traditional, very friendly and very peaceful. I like this kind of an atmosphere.

If you don't wanna go to a restaurant to eat, why not buy something to go! Food stores, bakeries and cafés offer good food also.

One of my favourite things is to go out and eat streetfood. Some people might say that you should never do that, you should only eat in restaurants that are near tourist hotspots and have food that you know. That's not how you get to know a foreign country's culture though. In Korea streetfood is really safe and very delicious.

If you're in a hurry or just want something warm to eat without having to heat it up at home, taste some streetfood. There are many types of dishes and you'll soon find your favourite. In Seoul Myengdong and Dongdaemun are the best places for literally eating out. Don't be afraid to try it!

I hope you learned something, and I hope you enjoyed watching the foods as much as I enjoyed eating them! It's always hard to wait until I can take a proper picture before eating, Korean food is so delicious!

What is your favourite Asian cuisine or restaurant?
